Marvin Gaye, Inner City Blues (What’s Going On, 1971, Original Detroit Mix)

My number one favorite summertime record. Note the absence of a question mark in the title. This is a statement, not a question, of what was going on in Detroit in 1971. It could easily have been written today. Berry Gordy packed up Motown and headed for sunny California before this album was released. He smoothed out the dirt and removed the Detroit. The original mix, produced by Marvin Gaye himself, was MUCH grittier and far superior and this is one of the most important re-releases of anything ever.
